This And That

I just had a few things to catch up on in my possible column folder so I thought why not today. Think of this as a low calorie column.

Let's start here. Recently a friend posted on Facebook that she was trying to get used to a new android phone after being an iPhone user previously. She mentioned that Android users were a bit smug about their phones. I was surprised by this because as an Android fan I have always thought that iPhone users were the smug ones.

Apple cultists tend to think anyone that doesn't use an Apple product has three heads and must be insane. Now, while I have no use for anything Apple makes I do accept the fact that for some people their inferior products work best for their needs.

Many people think that Apple dominates the marketplace but here are the facts.

Category Android Apple

Worldwide Share 68.2% 31.8%

Men 60.0% 40.0%

Women 54.0% 31.0%

Average Retail $300 $1000

Android users wonder why anyone would spend so much money on a phone, and do it every six months when they make minor changes. Boggles the mind.

Speaking of friends. Another friend sent me a copy of an ad for ESPN, or one of the networks, advertising games between these two old rivals this week and he suggested I pop some corn and open a beer and get ready for baseball. I replied that I had zero interest in either game and he responded that I was the weirdest baseball fan he knew.

If you read my last blog I mentioned several young players that I enjoyed watching but not Otahani or Judge. This stunned many people but so be it. Now with my lack of interest in these games, he is sure I've lost my mind.

Here is the thing. The Yankee/Red Sox games were exciting and meant something ten years ago. Today who cares? Same goes for the Dodgers/Giants rivalry. Today the Giants are irrelevant and the Dodger main rival are the Padres.

Watching these games today is like watching reruns of The Lucy Show. They were good back in the day but the world has moved on. Sorry to disappoint you.

This is a small bathroom garbage can. While smaller than a kitchen can it is still much larger than a bathroom plastic drinking cup. So why can I not ever drop the cup in this can without it bouncing off the rim and ending up behind the toilet every single day? I played several sports for most of my life and I would say I had above average eye-hand corordination that seems to have evaporated from my body.

I mean it is not brain surgery to rinse your mouth out of toothpaste and reach over and drop the cup three feet into the can yet for some reason this skill is up there with barefoot water skiing for me. Every single day the same result happens. A big bounce off the rim and either under the sink and cabinet or behind the toilet, neither of which is easy to get to. GRRRR.

We have survived two weekends of Coachella here and our festival season comes to an end this weekend with Stagecoach, the country version of Coachella with more cowboy boots. What it also means is the return of the Budweiser Clydesdales on parade down El Paseo.

This is like having them parade down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills but with more people in flip flops. These beautiful animals are something to behold when you see them in person. They are huge. The tradition here is that they parade from one end of the street to the other, about two miles, stopping along the way to make beer deliveries at a few of the local watering holes along the street.

It is our favorite activity to attend every year and today for the parade it will be a comfortable 82 degrees so we will not be sweltering like usual. This is also great news for the horses who I'm sure are not fans of triple digits either. As I do every year I will be hoping for a six pack to fall off the wagon into my lap. Fingers crossed.
