A Shellacking

The Democrats had a great night last night, that is indisputable. The MAGA Republican Party is in ruins today and the reign of the would be fascist ruler is effectively over. Those are the headlines, but the story of what happened yesterday is this, Democracy won.
Both sides of the aisle tried to play games with the voters ability to vote and we said enough. Clearly voters are not happy with what is going on in politics, nationally, statewide, and local, as incumbents, and Republicans, took a beating, mostly.
The top two things on the minds of people were the economy as 39% of voters said this was their number one issue and more specifically 49% of those said it was the cost of living they were concerned about.
Closely following were 32% of voters who said they were worried about Democracy and specifically 54% of them said corruption was their big issue. Immigration enforcement that is out of control, the war in Iran, and data centers followed.
None of this is really a surprise but what is a surprise is that these issues crossed party lines, races, and age groups. This was not a polarized election, this was a message of unity by the country that said we are tired of the mess and it is time to fix this.
So far the Democrats will have 54 Senators with two races still uncalled but leaning their way. If you include the two independents who caucus with them that would give them 58 votes, just two shy of a filibuster proof Senate. This means they will be able to override vetoes and actually get stuff done.
In the House it is even better for them. With many races still uncalled they are projected to have 245 seats. This could grow to over 250 which means they are well in control and will be able to pass legislation easily.
Having said all that, here is the reality for them.
Clearly voters want Congress to get back to working for the people and stop the partisan investigations getting in the way of governing. If the Democrats can do both, pass laws that help us get our cost of living under control, restore the safeguards we had with healthcare and retirement, and stop the war, the people will allow them to hold the bad actors of this administration accountable. But they must show that they are trying to improve our lives.
If they only focus on retribution and nothing changes for the people they will be voted out in two years. This is the mandate they have been given, fix politics and take us back to when we could work together to help people instead of hurting them.
Look, there is a mountain of a mess to fix and the list is longer than your arm. There will be plenty of time to get even down the road and wasting time on that now is not what we want. Prices need to start to come down. Healthcare support needs to be reinstated so people can afford to get help when they need it. This waste of money, and lives, war with Iran needs to end immediately. And the hate, fighting, and name calling has run its course. We are all tired of it.
No more nonsense on either side. Get back to work and make our lives better. We all need to ratchet our rhetoric down a few notches and start to help the country heal. Personally, I'm tired of being pissed off. I want, and expect, better than what we've been dealing with for ten plus years.
As for the felon and his thugs, they are toast. This beat down sends a clear message to any Republican still left in office that fealty to one man is over. It is time for them to return to earth one and put the voters first again. Here is hoping both sides understand the message sent yesterday loud and clear.
