One Of My Favorite Things

Writer: Dan MarichDan Marich

There are a lot of things to like about living here in the desert in Southern California but my favorite thing is when we have a rain storm down here and the mountains look like this the next day. This is my favorite way to look at snow, from ten thousand feet away.

Growing up and living most of my life in the Chicago area, I know snow. In fact the reason we now live here is because one February day in 2016 I came in from my third time blowing the snow off my driveway and sidewalk, covered in the cold white stuff, and told Linda, "this is the last time I am ever doing this again. Start packing we are moving." That summer we moved here and we haven't looked back once.

There is something about the juxtaposition of palm trees and snow covered mountains that fills my usually cold heart with happiness. Every single time I see a view like this I am in awe at nature. I just don't get how it can be warm and beautiful down here on the desert floor while there is two feet of snow in the mountains above me.

We have had an unusually cold winter this year but the rain/snow didn't arrive until this past week. What we did learn is that if it gets below eighty we are wearing sweaters or warmer clothes to stay warm. I remember coming out here to check in on my parents and laughing at my dad who was dressed up like January in Chicago when it was seventy-three degrees. Now I get it.

Yesterday our tallest mountain down here, San Gorgonio at eleven thousand feet, had clouds covering the middle of it while the peak was in blue sky and sunshine. Normal for the Rockies in Colorado but unusual for us here and it looked really cool. San Gorgonio will be the longest hold out for snow as summer approaches. The San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains will have their snow cover melted by the end of April or early May the latest. San Gorgonio will hold on until mid June and then we will be snowless until late winter once again.

Try to keep your focus playing golf with this view staring you in the face. We live in a beautiful place that gets even more beautiful when there is snow in the mountains. I hope you can come and see this for yourselves some day.
